Brahmin's Coffee Bar
Basavanagudi stand-and-go, older than the specialty scene by decades. Khara thatte idli, coffee, and a counter you don't sit at.
Hatti Kaapi
A Bengaluru-born, stand-and-go filter coffee chain - outlets across the city and at the airport, so it's often the first and last coffee of a trip. Try the Bella Kaapi, filter coffee sweetened with jaggery instead of sugar. The brand is also notable for employing specially-abled staff and senior citizens at many outlets.
Chikmagalur Queen's Coffee
Jayanagar 4th T Block, listed as Leesmith's. A neighbourhood counter for Chikmagalur coffee powder, not a laptop café. Buy the pudi for the filter at home. 729, 38th Cross, 16th A Main, opposite Cosmopolitan Dental Clinic.
Koshy's
St Mark's Road since 1952. Filter coffee, breakfast, and a room that has outlasted every café wave around it. Same family as Koshy's Automatic Bakery, different door. Come to sit, not to sample a tasting flight.
Matteo Coffea
Church Street, one of the earlier specialty coffee rooms in the centre. Still a sit-down between Brigade and St Mark's when you want espresso and a table, not a darshini tumbler.
Blue Tokai
A specialty roaster with real depth in the city, especially around Indiranagar - closer to a sit-down work session than a quick cup, with proper single-origin pour-overs if that's what you're after.
Benki
A small Jayanagar specialty bar that roasts in-house. Pour-overs, odd lattes, beans from Karnataka estates. Tight space, often a queue, not built for a three-hour laptop session. Go for the coffee.
Third Wave Coffee
Started in Bengaluru and now has rooms across the city. Flat whites and a reliable table when you need to work. The chain version of the new coffee habit, useful even if it isn't the most particular cup.
Maverick & Farmer
A Bengaluru roaster with tasting rooms attached. Estate lots and pour-overs, more particular than a high-street chain, less tiny than Benki. Good when you want the beans explained without standing in a doorway.
Katte Kulture
A Jayanagar café in a restored heritage house, founded by two sisters and inspired by the coffee estates of Chikmagalur - garden seating, farm-to-table coffee, millet-based snacks. Named for the katte, the stone platform outside old Bengaluru homes where neighbours gather to talk.
Alchemy Coffee Roasters
Also Jayanagar, and a direct thread back to Chikmagalur - single-origin beans from the Baarbara Estate, roasted in-house, in a brick-and-wood space that cares more about the cup than the room.
Calm Coffee
Also in Jayanagar - a striking, deliberately minimal building carved from deep earth tones, built to feel like a pause from the street outside. Worth a visit for the architecture as much as the coffee.
Hole in the Wall Café
Koramangala brunch from the 2000s, still packed for eggs, pancakes, and a long breakfast. Not filter-coffee culture. The other morning habit, from when the city's café map was still short.
Dyu Art Café
A JP Nagar courtyard room that opened when independent cafés were still unusual here. Art on the walls, slow tables, filter and espresso. One of the older 'sit with a book' addresses, before every block had three new ones.
